And the honeymoon destination is…

14 Feb

Negril, Jamaica.

Now, about 200 people have asked me where we are going for our honeymoon. I lied to all of you.  I didn’t mean to lie. We just couldn’t decide!

We spent many many hours reading reviews on TripAdvisor, looking through countless photos of resorts from Cancun to Costa Rica. But we just couldn’t commit to one. I think the problem stemmed from not being able to turn the honeymoon vision in our heads into a reality.

We knew we wanted tropical. Something with lots of soft sand and blue water. And all-inclusive was a must because not having to carry, count, or be concerned with money is truly a vacation!

What we found was a very nice selection of sprawling, massive resort complexes with dozens of pools, restaurants and bars. The rooms were lavish with marble and granite everywhere and lush linens. Striking, really. But we couldn’t decide on one and I think that’s because in reality, we have zero interest in words like “sprawling” and “lavish.” I prefer “lush” to apply to vegetation, not linens.

In case you didn’t read my post about Memphis – we tend to prefer places that feel authentic, storied and full of character. In a word, we are simple. Cue Negril. Billed as the “capital of casual,” Negril is said to be not a place, but a state of mind. Now we’re talking.

So after an exhaustive search we have book 6 nights/7 days at Couples Swept Away Negril. I’d call it barefoot chic. Totally laid back, casual and not even a hint of pretention. We’re going to pass on the marble and oversized jacuzzi and go with this:

It is perfect. It is the essence of tropical. Warm colored tile, wooden shuttered windows, gauzy linens. There is no TV but (thank God) there is a mini bar. And thanks to a super awesome sale price – those french doors will open to a verandah that is a mere 15 feet from this:

Oh, sweet Jesus. The vision is a reality. Seven days lounging on the famed 7 Mile Beach, consuming my body weight in Appleton Rum, sitting on the verandah as the sun sets and sleeping with those shutters wide open to let in the ocean breeze…those are the only things on our honeymoon to-do list. It will be a much needed break from our seemingly endless wedding to-do list.

And probably I’ll need to spend some time sitting here:

And singing karaoke here (why not? no one in Jamaica knows us!):

So let the count down begin – We leave on my birthday and we’ll return just in time for Christmas. Happy Wedding, Happy Birthday, Happy Christmas.

Adios life savings – Hellloooo Negril.
